Those aboard the recent Smooth Jazz Cruise West Coast Edition cannot have failed to be captivated by the old school blockbuster ‘Mary Jane’ as delivered by Candy Dulfer with vocals from Chance Howard. It’s a regular feature of Dulfer’s live shows and is in fact a fine interpretation of the Rick James classic that was released in 1978 and was the second single from his debut album ‘Come Get It’.
In the USA the song peaked in the top five on the R&B charts and was composed by James, along with keyboardist Billy Nunn, who was credited for the keyboards, strings, background vocals, helping to compose the song, arranging flute parts, and other instrumentation work.
This version by Dulfer was recorded at the Metropool, Hengelo, Holland in April 2012 and is a good example of the sort of high octane performance one has come to expect from Candy and her band.
