It was back in 2007 that I first became aware of ultra smooth saxophonist Dee Lucas through his excellent CD ‘Something To Ride 2’. Mellow and in the pocket throughout it was a real delight and having checked out his latest project, the decidedly sensual ‘Going Deeper’, I am pleased to report Dee has lost none of his musical charisma. With six original songs plus two well chosen covers this one is indeed worth looking out for.
Take for example one of those cover versions, a feisty take on the Gershwin standard ‘Summertime’ that here Lucas makes sound brand new or the ultra tight title cut that is a wonderful example of sophisticated contemporary jazz.
Elsewhere the easy paced ‘Ladies First’ is a real crowd pleaser and much the same can be said of ‘Making Moves’ that is co-written by Joel Del Rosario and which trips along on an understated ‘steppers beat’. Later, the rippling bass intro of ‘We’re On The Move’ sets the stage for more of Dee’s mellifluous playing and although he closes out the collection with a fifty eight second reprise of ‘Ladies First’ it is the romantically inclined ‘We Got That Love’ which makes particularly good use of backing vocals that really hit the spot.
Talking of vocals they are again to the fore (and in the capable hands of Dee and Brittani Cole) for Lucas’ take on Brian McKnight’s ‘Uh Oh Feeling’ and all things considered ‘Going Deeper’ can be regarded as an excellent addition to this year’s crop of new releases.
Check it out.
